General Directions for Administering the Kindergarten Pre-Test and Post-Test

The Kindergarten Pre-Test and Post-Test each have three parts, assessing children’s readiness in:

  • Letter Recognition
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Comprehension (Story Sense)

The Grade K Pre-Test should be administered at the beginning of Kindergarten for a diagnostic snapshot of children’s skills. The Kindergarten Post-Test should be administered at the end of the year to chart children’s progress in each area.

Letter Recognition Pre-Test and Post-Test

This section evaluates a child’s ability to identify uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Make a single copy of the appropriate Letter Recognition page for each child. Follow the directions on the page to administer, mark, and score.

Phonemic Awareness Pre-Test and Post-Test

This section provides a full evaluation of a child’s mastery level of all phonemic skills covered in Kindergarten. Make a single copy of the appropriate Phonemic Awareness Record for each child. Follow the direction to administer and mark answers on the Record.

Comprehension (Story Sense) Pre-Test and Post-test

This section uses wordless pictures to evaluate a child’s understanding of story structure and reflects a child’s ability to recall details and comprehend the main idea. Make one copy of the Story Sense protocol for each child. (You need only one copy of the wordless story for all children.) Follow the directions on the protocol to administer, mark, and score these tests.

Scores on each section of the Kindergarten Pre- and Post-Tests can be entered into the online system of Rigby READS to generate individual progress reports, class reports, and English and Spanish home letters. READS will also use these scores to identify children for possible Tier 1 intervention.

See the Teacher’s User’s Guide or Technical FAQ Help Desk links for information on entering scores and generating reports for the Grade K Pre- and Post-Test.
