RTI is not a single, specific approach, but a process of implementing high-quality, scientifically researched instruction, monitoring student progress, and adjusting instruction to best serve students' needs. Literacy by Design's research-based approach to differentiation embeds intervention strategies into the framework of the of the program as a whole. Research has shown that interventions not directly linked to classroom instruction produce limited results; intervention must reflect the strategy instruction of the general education classroom. When intervention specialists can use materials that complement and reflect general education classroom materials, student learning is reinforced and extended.
